Description
SCOTLAND. Alexander III. 1249-1286. AR Penny (19mm, 1.25 g, 4h). Second coinage, class J. Struck circa 1280-1286. Crowned head left; scepter to left / Long cross pattée; mullets in quarters (4 mullets of 6 points). Burns 79 (fig. 209); Stewart & North class J; SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian), 286 (same dies); SCBC 5059. Toned, light porosity, areas of weak strike. Good Fine. Rare.

From the Raymond Collection.

The rough style of Class J places this as the latest of the Alexander III sterlings. Additionally, die links have been found between this class and the earliest coins of John Baliol.
